As long as the navigator knows the direction of the swells
(by checking them at sunset), he can maintain orientation even when there
are no visual clues in the night sky. If, however, he becomes confused
or disoriented, he needs to recognize this state and take appropriate action
to avoid sailing in an unknown direction for an extended period of time;
that is, he should stop sailing until he is reoriented.
