CREW SELECTION CRITERIA

The following criteria are used in crew selection:

1. Sailing Experience: Inter-island, coastal or deep sea sailing experience on a voyaging canoe.

2. Age: 20 - 55 (General guideline w/ exceptions)

3. Health: Pass required medical exams and answer questionnaire.

4. Physical conditioning: Pass swim test (1 hour swim; minimum distance of 500 meters)

5. Sailing skills / abilities

6. Adaptation to Ocean Environment

7. Team Player

8. Demonstrated commitment to the mission, goals, and programs of PVS.

9. Strong commitment to learning.

10. Commitment to:

· maintenance and care of the canoes,

· teaching and sharing with schools and the community, and

· the on-going operations and other programs of PVS.

 

CATEGORIES:

Leadership/Experienced Crew:

This category of sailors is intended to provide the necessary experience and leadership to keep the voyages safe. They will also provide instruction to the apprentice and student categories.

· 3 deep sea legs on voyage conducted by PVS.

· 10 years of support for voyaging efforts within Hawai' i.

There are exceptional individuals who do not meet the above criteria, but have demonstrated the maturity and ability to provide leadership, and have been added to this category.

Apprentice Crew:

· 1 to 2 deep sea voyages conducted by PVS

· Provide added experience to the Rapa Nui voyage.

· It is intended that they will gain valuable deep sea experience during the Rapa Nui Voyage, in order to position them for leadership roles in the upcoming Statewide Sail and Micronesia -Japan Voyage.

Student Crew:

This category represents an investment in Hawai'i's voyaging future. Individuals will be selected based on the crew selection criteria, although they have no deep sea experience.

Specialists:

These individuals possess unique skills and abilities that are essential to conducting our voyages safely, and meeting our various education and community goals. They include: medical personnel, documentors, educators, and others with unique skills.
