What Are We Doing to Care for and Protect

Our Special Island Home?

Malama Hawai'i, an initiative of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and others who support the Malama Hawai'i vision and mission, was established in 1996 to create opportunities for people and organizations to take responsibility for and strengthen what we value about Hawai'i, our special island home. (Malama Hawai'i means "to care for and protect Hawai'i.") Malama Hawai'i is based on the following vision and mission:

VISION

Hawai'i, our special island home is a place where the land and sea are cared for, and communities are healthy and safe.

MISSION

Malama Hawai'i is dedicated to making a meaningful and on-going contribution to the health and spirit of Hawai'i's land and sea, and the quality of life of all of Hawai'i's people through education, and community-building.

Malama Hawai'i Projects

The Polynesian Voyaging Society is interested in finding out about classes or schools who are carrying out projects to malama Hawai'i-to restore, care for, enhance, or protect some part of Hawai'i's unique and precious heritage, environment, or community. We would like to feature selected projects on our website to inspire others to adopt similar projects.

If your class or school is carrying out a project that fits the vision and mission of Malama Hawai'i and you would like it to be considered for inclusion in the Malama Hawai'i section of the Polynesian Voyaging Society website, please send a short description of it (up to two-pages) to this address:
